Focusing on Women

Focusing on women is a radical act in a world that demands their subordination. There are lots of ways to do this - you can choose to develop fruitful female friendships, do volunteer work in women's issues, or even prioritize reading books by women.

Focusing on women's art can be a prophylaxis against female erasure. Time and time again, women are written out of canons. Fighting for inclusion in these canons is a worthy goal. I also believe that making our own canons is powerful.

Focusing on women is healing to the soul. It is inspiring to find work that speaks to you. Everyone wants to see their story reflected in the culture.

Focusing on women can teach you more about the world. When you choose to view women as important, you also recognize that women everywhere, from all matter of circumstance, are important. Focusing on women leads you to reading about women from outside the west, women who are disabled, women who are very poor, women who are very rich, women who have unusual sexual inclinations, all matter of women doing all matter of things. Feminism is not just about lifting up women who are like you, but about recognizing the common humanity of women.
